Enigma Morph leopard geckos
The enigma morph was first produced around 5-6 years ago in America. It is a dominant gene mutation which has the ability to produce some stunning patterns and colours. Unfortunately for reasons that are as yet unknown some enigmas suffer from neurological problems known as Enigma syndrome or ES. This can vary in severity from mild symptoms such as circling or star gazing which only present occasionally to severe problems such as death rolling and muscle spasms which can leave the affected leo unable to feed or shed for themselves and totally reliant on their owner for survival.
Not all enigmas are affected and as mentioned previously the cause is unknown at present. There are currently studies and research being carried out which hope to be able to shed more light on this but it is hoped that by breeding only symptom free animals to non enigma morphs will eventually only produce healthy symptom free enigmas.
We make as sure as possible that all our enigmas used for breeding are symptom free and healthy and as of now we have not produced any affected babies. Babies advertised on this site will be 100% healthy and symptom free at time of sale unless otherwise stated. It is thought that stress eg a new environment has the potential to bring on symptoms and while these will in the majority be mild and will probably subside when the gecko has settled and adjusted to their new environment, It is something we would ask all potential enigma owners to be aware of and to research before they buy. We are happy to assist new owners and offer advice and support for as long as you own one of our geckos. We can not however be responsible for the health of your leo once it has left our care and is under you charge. We will guarantee the health of all geckos purchased from us for 1 week after leaving us.
T.E.S.S or The Enigma Syndrome Study is currently being conducted by friends of ours at The Grinning Gecko and Triple M geckos who are working hard to try and secure funding to allow a full scientific study into Enigma Syndrome and it's causes, hopefully a cure can eventually be found. They need as many people as possible to contribute to this study. If you own or have owned an enigma morph leo we would be grateful if you would consider entering them into the study. Just follow the link below and complete the short questionnaire. It takes just a couple of minutes and all details, data etc will be kept confidential and only used by the study administrators.
